Instant flexibility at Yoga Practice
Flexibility is the range of motion in a joint that crosses the joints to induce a twisting and bending movement. Flexibility varies from person to person. As age increases, flexibility decreases. This is the reason why children are more flexible than adults. Being flexible can be more advantageous as our joints allow a more comprehensive range of movement. Even in our day-to-day life, flexibility plays an essential role by restricting problems like joint pains, back pain, arthritis, etc.
Why is flexibility important?
Lower the risk of injury
Flexibility is a crucial factor that reduces the risk of injury for almost all activities which are we performing in our daily life. These activities include everything that we act like walking, running, exercising, playing any game, etc. While performing these activities, we need to move, bend, and twist our body or joints. If you are flexible enough, then you can perform these activities without any limits as your body will work smoothly. However, being not flexible can restrict your movements. You may get some severe injuries regarding joints.
Increase the range of motion
Tight muscles limit the range of motion of our body, which also affects our posture. This limit results in restrictions in our daily activities. Becoming more flexible can eliminate these restrictions and allow the muscles to work in the full range of motion. When your muscle is performing in a full range of motion, it improves your posture automatically.
Improved blood circulation
By performing flexibility training daily, blood flow circulation gets improved. When blood circulation improves, it carries nutrients and oxygen very efficiently. That means our whole body gets proper nutrients that maintain overall health.
Reduce soreness of muscle
Flexibility helps to reduce the pain of muscle. Flexibility comes with the great practice of stretching. During stretching, we need to hold the position for a few seconds, which is very painful. However, by practicing, that painful positions become our habit, and after practicing a few days, that pain gets eliminated. This is how flexibility helps to reduce the soreness of muscle.
Better heart health
Arterial stiffness is a risk factor of heart disease. According to The National Center for Biotechnology Information ( NCBI ), flexibility helps us to reduce arterial stiffness. Also, many physicians recommend stretching practices to overcome heart disease.
As we grow old, especially when becoming a senior citizen, we get struggling to balance ourselves. If we succeed in maintaining flexibility by regular stretching, then we can decrease the risk of imbalance.
So, everyone wants to become flexible, but being flexible is not everyone’s cup of tea. The process behind it is painful, and most of the people quit after a few days. However, developing flexibility is not also that much tricky. Stretching will be the best practice to improve more flexibility. If you stick to your method, execute the plans determinately, you become flexible.
First of all, you need to understand which muscle of your body pulls you back from doing regular works. It may be hamstring, glutes, etc. When you figure out the most restricting tissue, initially focus on that muscle.
Take a shower before your practice
Taking a shower before your training can make your body 10-15% more flexible.
How? Let me explain.
When we take a shower, it loosens our muscles. After taking a shower, we feel relaxed. As there is no pressure, we can perform very energetically, which makes our body flexible unexpectedly.
Warm-up and stretching
Warm-up is the most effective practice to activate the muscles before performing any stretching exercise. You can do any warm-up exercises like walking, jogging, jumping jacks, squats, etc. After completing the warm-up, you can go for stretching exercises. Static stretches allow our muscles to move comfortably in a particular direction, which ensures more flexibility.
Stretch your arms and shoulders, do butterfly pose, trunk twisting, swan pose, cow pose, sun salutations, etc. These stretching practices activate your muscles very efficiently.
Keep in mind that dont stretch beyond your limit. If you feel more pain, dont move further. While stretching, move your muscles gently, avoid jerks. Dont hold your breath during practicing stretches.
Perform on an empty stomach
It is strongly recommended to practice Yoga on an empty stomach. Our body needs more energy to perform Yoga or stretching practices. When we eat our food, our tissue uses the energy to process the food in the digestive system. That means energy is essential to digest the food. In case, when we perform some stretching practice, the same energy is used to fulfill the need of our body. This process takes energy away from the digestion process, and hence digestion process remains incomplete. Because of incomplete digestion, food gets stuck as it was, which results in gases problems. Therefore It is firmly recommended to practice Yoga on an empty stomach for getting better results during Yoga.
Sleep properly before practice
Sleep is a crucial factor that directly affects our performance. Getting quality sleep can boost your overall performance throughout the day. While performing yoga practices, proper sleep refreshes the body and is self-explanatory.
Choose clothes wisely
Why choosing clothes are also an essential part of performing practices?
There is a direct connection between what you wear and how you feel in clothes. Imagine you are wearing loose clothes while performing an exercise. After a few moments, you find yourself pulling or slipping your outfits, which could be more frustrating during yoga practice. After all, Yoga is all about living present moments, and these kinds of frustrating moments can ruin our mood very severely. Also, loose clothes restrict movements. Hence, before practicing, prefer outfits carefully.
Above mentioned methods can definately improve your flexibility, but it is only possible if you maintain consistency. I have seen many people who are trying hard to become flexible, but after a few days, they surrender as there is a lot of pain, muscle soreness involved. If you want to become resilient, focus on daily practices. Drink a lot of water and fluids as they act as a lubricant for the muscle joint. After performing stretching activities, spend some time for relaxation. Relaxation keeps the stress away from limiting our range of motion. If you are serious about flexibility, you can go for a massage. Massage releases the tension very effectively and allows muscles to move maximum.
