What is Ashtanga Yoga?

There are two aspects of Ashtanga Yoga; theoretical and practical.

Theory: Ashtanga yoga, or eight-limbed yoga/eightfold path of yoga towards liberation, is a philosophical/theoretical concept first mentioned in a book (Yoga Sutras) written about 2000 years ago by Rishi Patanjali. The eight different limbs are Yama (seld-restraint), Niyama (discipline), Asana (postures), Pranayama (breathwork), Pratyahara (making the five senses look inwards), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (Bliss)

Practice: Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga (also called Ashtanga Yoga) is a yoga system developed by K. Pattabhi Jois in the early 20th century. This system takes inspiration from the teachings of his teacher, T. Krishnamacharya, who taught him the essence of various texts like Yoga Sutras, Hatha Yoga Pradpika, and Yoga Korunta. Ashtanga yoga is known for its emphasis on precision and alignment. The primary series of Ashtanga yoga is a set of poses linked with vinyasas. The primary series is a foundation practice that provides the basis of the other five Ashtanga yoga sequences. As well as the poses, it includes a specific pranayama technique, usage of bandha, Drishti (eye gaze points), and coordinated movement. The Sanskrit name for the Primary Series is Yoga Chikitsa, which translates as “Yoga Therapy.” It is thus named because it is said to purify and heal the body.
